Duvet Covers

I’ve found several interesting discussions about the common practice in Europe to make use of two duvets on one bed. Apparently, some travelers to Europe are a bit puzzled over the practice from what I’ve read. Some are annoyed by it, but it is, when you consider it a sensible idea. Let me explain further. In many European countries it is common custom (even in hotel rooms) to have duvets on the bed instead of bed sheets, blankets and quilts. So, in a twist on this they have a tendency to make up a double bed with two single duvets. Why would this be?

I have just finished an article on cleaning duvets that was in part inspired on a study reported in the BBC on such a large percentage of Britons that sleep under dirty duvets. Many had not been cleaned in 6 months and some had not been cleaned in over 10 years. One was so bad that there was around 20,000 live dust mites and a measurable amount of dried skin, dust mite feces and other allergens.

So, which is it, is it called a duvet or a duvet cover? Controversy of unparalleled heights in the bedding and linens world isn’t it?

Traditionally the duvet is considered the down comforter itself and the duvet cover is simply the protective (and many times decorative) covering that encloses it. However it has become common use in the United States to call the cover itself a duvet. I’m not quite sure when this practice started and technically it’s not correct. Why?

Duvet comes from the french word for down as in, down comforter and so the duvet is really the contents of what many people are calling the duvet or the bag that their comforter goes in. So, officially they should be called a duvet cover or duvet covers.

They have an interesting history and although were once popular only in some parts of Europe have become popular today around the world.

We will be using this blog to highlight the work and new information that we will be adding to this site. I don’t expect that there will be many news items here on the duvet or the duvet cover, but as appropriate we will make use of this space for such items.
