A duvet cover is essentially a bag that is designed to contain a down comforter. Essentially it is a protective covering and depending on the material may protect the down comforter against staining or even dust and dust mites. The duvet cover can also be a decorative covering aiding in the coordination of colors with that of other fabrics in the room such as the carpet or drapery. Traditionally, the practice of having a duvet instead of seperate sheets and blankets originated in Europe and travelers noted the different bed covering. A duvet cover can also make the process of making a bed easier because if you use it the way it was traditionally used it would be the only covering on the bed to put back in place.

Today duvet covers are found around the world as their popularity has spread. The word duvet comes from the French word for down (as in a down comforter). So, it is technicially not correct to call the cover a duvet. Only the material that goes within the cover is the duvet and as the name implies that traditionally was down. Today however there are other materials in use ranging from polyfill to the original down.

Placing the Comforter in the Duvet Cover

It can be a bit tricky to place your quilt or comforter within your duvet cover but with a little bit of practice and a few tips it will get to be an easy task. First you need to place your quilt or comforter spread on a large flat surface. Since this will be going on the bed it is the ideal place to spread out your comforter. If it is a larger comforter it may be helpful to have someone assist you with this.

Next take your duvet cover and turn it inside out. This will mean that your pattern for the exterior will now be on the inside for a few moments. Now you will want to reach inside the inverted duvet cover and find the corners that border the short end of the cover. grasp one corner in each hand.

Maintaining your grasp on the corners of the duvet cover, go ahead and line these up with the same corners bordering the short side of the down comforter or quilt. Grasping the matching corners of quilt or comforter through the fabric of the duvet cover start to unroll the duvet cover over the comforter. It may take a bit of shaking, or if you have a second person they can help, but you should be able to lift both and let the duvet cover start to slide down and envelope your comforter as you work it back to being right side out.

Finally button up your duvet cover and place it on the bed. You will probably find it best to position the buttons at the foot of the bed and if you turn it the correct way you should be able to hide the buttons of the duvet cover on the underside of the cover and comforter.

Duvet Covers have become a popular choice for bedding around the world. Originally it was a type of bedding found in continental Europe or Scandinavia. The Duvet draws its name from the French word for down and that is the material that the quilt that a duvet covers is used with contains. The duvet (or quilt) can contain feathers, silk, wool, cotton, polyester batting or other artificial fibers. This duvet is then used with a duvet cover to keep it clean, or to coordinate it with the decor of a room. The duvet may be confused with a quilt, but the distinction is typically that a quilt is used on top of other bedding, a duvet is used as the sole bed covering.

Bedding however can be a great living and hiding place for all sorts of dust and dirt and duvets are no different. Dust mites can thrive in the duvet and it’s important that it be cleaned regularly. If you are allergic to dust and dust mites it would be especially important to find a duvet cover that is resistant to dust mites passing through the material. Cleaning the duvet seems as though it could be a challenging process. A large commercial washing machine is recommended for a duvet to be cleaned. You should not have a duvet dry cleaned as the chemicals may damage the filler material. If you choose to dry your duvet in the dryer you should stop it periodically and break up any lumps of damp filler material that have clumped together. You should also use low heat to dry your duvet.

It’s worth noting that it takes special measures beyond a simple run through the washer to kill off dust mites. Dust mites have been shown to be more effectively killed off if certain essential oils are used in the washing process such as pine, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil. These can kill a large majority of the dust mites in the duvet and will also leave a refreshing scent. Unfortunately just killing dust mites is note quite enough. Most allergies to dust mites are to their waste products and their bodies (dead or live) and so it might be effective to shake out or even beat your duvet with a broom as it’s suspended from a line. After this you will need to redistribute the filling material so that it is evenly placed. If you start out with a dust mite proof duvet cover you will not have to take such extreme cleaning measures of your duvet, you can simply focus your cleaning on the duvet cover on a regular basis and still avoid allergies related to dust mites in a dirty duvet.

Even with a good duvet cover it would be wise to regularly wash your duvet, however it should not be necessary to go to such extreme measures to remove dust mites from the duvet if you have an effective duvet cover. One advantage to the duvet cover is if they are allergen proof you should be able to just change out the duvet cover for washing on a frequent basis and then on a less frequent schedule clean your duvet. Another advantage to this routine is that you will be able to change out the look and feel of your bedroom on a regular basis as well if you have duvet covers with various designs.

In many countries Duvets are the most popular form of bedding. Instead of sheets, blankets and quilts a single duvet is typically the sole bed covering. This has some benefits. it can be easier to change out the look and feel of your bedding with different duvet covers and can also make the chore of making a bed much simpler as there is a single cover to arrange instead of several layers. In some countries it is even customary to have two single duvets on a double bed for instance so that couples can have customized covers. The duvets come in different thicknesses and tog ratings with lower tog ratings suitable for warmer months and higher tog ratings for colder weather.

In many countries where the duvet is a customary bedding there are strong warnings against using a duvet with a newborn or infant for the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). This is a serious concern and most recommendations are to avoid thick soft beddings of any kind in favor of much thinner blankets. From what I have read stuffed animals are discouraged as well to guard against the risk of SIDS. There has been some testing on this subject and it turns out that studies have not shown a significant increase in risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome with the use of a duvet.

I certainly would not go out on a limb and encourage people to use a duvet with their infant. However, it appears that in coming years there may be some rethinking on the issue. I’m sure this is an area that more study will be done as it is a very serious concern for parents. As a parent if there was even one chance in a thousand that a duvet would possible cause this syndrome which is little understood, I would avoid that risk any way possible.

The truth is that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is still not well understood. In many cases it is suspected that overheating has played a factor, in others sleep position. For many the main cause (or causes) is still quite a mystery. If overheating is a cause then certainly a duvet, or down comforter or quilt would be an item to avoid in infants bedding. Beyond that, I see a good common sense to not use a duvet or quilt or comforter for your infants bedding. Quite simply, it’s the small bits of material inside your duvet that if the fabric tears could be a choking hazard. So, my bottom line is that in spite of the studies that say the duvet may not have anything to do with SIDS I would still follow the current recommendations to not use a duvet for infants bedding.

So, at what age would it be appropriate for a child to move up to a duvet as their bedding. That might be a good question for your childs Pediatrician. I suspect though that at the age that they are moving to a real bed would be an appropriate time. Of course, as parents we always want to provide for and protect our children to our utmost and I would finish up by suggesting that you refer any doubts or questions you have on the matter to your Pediatrician.

Like many American men I must confess that the first time I heard someone refer to a Duvet or Duvet Cover, I had no idea what they could be referring to. In fact I think it’s probably been less than two years ago that I first heard of a Duvet and I’m in my thirties. So, I suspect that I’m not the only person that hadn’t heard of a duvet or a duvet cover or would even have an idea of where one might be found. For those of you that don’t know, it’s related to bedding. Coming from a tradition where we had sheets, blankets, quilts, covers and spreads I really was somewhat surprised when I started reading about the idea of a duvet or duvet cover.

So, the word duvet comes to us from French. The word originally means down and so it refers to a down filled cover for a bed. This type of bed covering originated in continental Europe and observers from other places found it quite an unusual practice. One writer even commented that they sleep upon one mattress filled with down and cover themselves with a second down mattress. This was essentially the duvet and it was used in place of separate sheets and quilts or blankets. So you may see that the duvet has some advantages, if nothing else it makes the task of making a bed extremely easy and straightforward. There is only one covering to be placed over the bed.

Duvet Covers are simply designed to be decorative or protective coverings for the duvet. They come in many sizes as the duvets do. Some duvet covers come with the idea of preventing dust mites or other allergens from entering into the down filling. They also may come in silk and other materials to match different peoples tastes or fabric preferences. They even come in different colors and designs to help people match the decor of their bedrooms or even to change out their decor with a fresh duvet cover without having to change out the duvet.

In many places in Europe it’s even common for two, single size duvets to be placed on a queen or larger size bed. The advantage to this can be that for couples they can have individualized thicknesses of the duvet and it also solves the perennial problem of one person stealing the covers. Did I say different thicknesses? Yes, duvets and duvet covers can have different tog ratings to refer to different heat retention capabilities. Higher tog ratings translate into a warmer cover. These days the filling of a duvet doesn’t have to be down, but can be most any other fiber that is used for quilting material from man made to natural materials the variety is really up to the preference of the buyer. Some will want to avoid down for allergy reasons for instance.

So now you can no longer claim that you don’t know what a duvet is. This type of bedding that was once uniquely European has now made it literally around the world and it will go by different names. In some places it’s known as a duvet, others as a dyne or doona. It has been called a continental quilt and in Pakistan it is even known as a Ralli Quilt. Whatever the name, for many it spells warmth and comfort!

Duvet Covers come in a wide variety of sizes and designs and are made with a great variety of fabrics today. This article will give an overview of some of the different kinds of materials that are currently used as well as their advantages and disadvantages. For those of you that don’t yet know what a duvet cover is, the duvet is a somewhat like a quilt which was traditionally filled with down. These days the duvet can be filled with a wide variety of materials including down, and a variety of man made and natural fibers. The duvet is typically used in place of any other type of bedding and a duvet cover is used to both protect the duvet and keep it clean and as a fashionable addition to your bedroom and it’s decor.

Silk is a popular fibre for it’s unmatched smoothness and luxurious feel. Today duvet covers are made with silk and it can give a luxurious feel like no other fabric. One of the disadvantages is the price. Silk duvet covers can be very expensive, but also can be quite durable with good care. If you are interested in trying a silk duvet it too has many advantages. When silk is used as the filling material you will find that it does not serve as a home to dust mites the way down would. Silk linens should be washed in warm water and care should be made to avoid pulling or snagging the fabric. Silk filled duvets require fairly little care. Another advantage of silk is it’s ability to be dyed easily with vibrant colors.

Cotton is a another popular fiber that is used often for duvet covers. One of the advantages of cotton is easy and simple cleaning and care. Additionally cotton can allow air to pass easily (or breath well) and comes in a wide range of styles and varieties. Some Egyptian cottons are more expensive and the higher thread counts have smoother, softer feels to them. Egyptian cotton can make for a very luxurious feel in a duvet cover as well. Cotton is perhaps not as durable as some other fabrics and over time may deteriorate faster than others. While Egyptian Cotton can be more expensive some varieties are not as expensive and can be quite affordable. Along with ease of dying, cotton can be woven into patterns and textures allowing for great flexibility in the look of a duvet cover.

Polyester is a man made material that has been used to make duvet covers. Polyester can be very durable and this is why many times it is blended with cotton as a compromise between cottons comfort and polyesters durability. Faux suede is a fabric that is derived from polyester. It can look and feel much like real suede. It is certainly cheaper, easier to clean and can be had in many different colors. Faux suede can also hold it’s color better than real suede would.

Regardless of which fabric you choose for a duvet cover there are many factors that you should consider in your shopping including the comfort, price as well as the obvious size considerations. You should also keep in mind the look and feel of the decor of your bedroom that you are going to be using this duvet cover in. Coming years may see yet more options in fabrics used to make duvet covers but it can be hard to imagine materials that could surpass some of the advantages of the silk, cottons and polyester cotton blends afford.

For most people, making their beds can be a bit difficult. They have to put bed sheets, blankets, comforter, and other kinds of bedding. But some people, especially in European countries, use a duvet. This makes it easy for them to change their bedding. If you use a duvet, you can use it by itself, without using other kinds of bedding covers like blankets and sheets.

One important aspect to look at when choosing a duvet is the duvet cover. A duvet cover looks like a giant pillow case that covers your duvet. Duvets are filled with down or soft materials to make them more comfortable. To change the look of your duvet, all you need to do is to replace the duvet cover.

However, choosing the best duvet cover is not as easy as it seems. If you want some tips, read the paragraphs below about choosing the best cover for your duvet.

Just like traditional comforters, duvets also come in different sizes—twin, queen, king, and California king. You have to select the right size for your duvet cover based on the size of the duvet. If you have a twin sized bedding, you do not want to choose a queen sized cover. It will be too big. One the other hand, choosing a small cover for a big duvet is also not good because the bedding will not fit into the cover, which means you just wasted your money and time.

You should also check the thread count of the cover. When you see the term ‘thread count’ or ‘TC’ in the product’s label, this means the number of thread per square inch. Some covers have a 100 TC while others can have more than 1000 TC. If you want a really soft cover for your bedding, something that is very comfortable, you should choose a higher TC. The higher the TC, the softer the cover will be. If you want a good quality cover, a 300 TC is okay.

Another factor to consider is the cover closures. These covers are fastened using different kinds of closures like zippers, buttons, hook-n-loop strips, ties, and snaps. Make sure that the closures are of high quality. for example, the zippers should me sturdy and buttons should be sewn firmly. This way, when it is time for you to wash the cover, you can easily remove it form the bedding without having any trouble. And when you put it in the washer, you do not have to worry about the zipper getting stuck or the buttons becoming loose because they are not strong enough.

The fabric is another important thing to consider when choosing a duvet cover. Bedding covers are made from different fabrics. The most common is cotton. Cotton is perfect for your bedding because it is very comfortable and soft. Since it is a natural material, it also ‘breathes,’ so to speak. You can also choose silk (which is very luxurious), faux suede, velvet (which is perfect for cold months), and a combination of two fabrics.

If you have a down comforter or a duvet, you should get a good quality cover that protects your expensive comforter and at the same time makes it look attractive. Duvet covers come in different styles, fabrics, patterns, and textures. Choose the one that suits your needs. For example, if you have a queen bedding or comforter, you should choose queen sized cover, of course, where your bedding will fit snugly. You should also choose style and color that are perfect for your bedroom décor.

You have to know that duvet covers are pricey, especially those that are made of high quality fabrics. You should know how to properly take care of them if you want them to last for a long time. To help you on this one, here are some tips to remember when caring for duvet covers.

Check whether your cover is machine washable or not. You can see this in the label. If it is not machine washable, you have to leave the cleaning to a professional dry cleaner service. But if it is machine washable, you can do it by yourself at home. When buying a duvet cover, it is better to choose something that you can easily wash by yourself, such as cotton duvet covers. After all, you buy covers for your down comforter because it is difficult to clean the comforter itself. It defeats the purpose if your cover is difficult to clean and maintain as well.

After reading the care instructions, you can proceed to washing the cover in your washer. If there are stains, make sure to pre-treat them before putting the cover in the washer. Choose a stain remover that is appropriate for the fabric. Wait for 5 minutes before placing the cover in the washer to let the fabric absorb the stain remover.

When placing the cover in the washer, make sure that its weight is evenly distributed. If it is not evenly distributed, the washer will not spin correctly, which can damage your washer and which will not thoroughly clean your duvet cover.

Use your regular laundry detergent and proceed washing the cover. You have to make sure that the stains are all gone before putting it in the dryer. You do not want to cover your down comforter with something that still has stains and dirt.

Place the cover in the dryer. Adjust the dryer in the lowest heat setting. It is okay to dry it several times that to use a high heat setting because this will protect you cover from bleaching or discoloration. Once it is completely dry, take it out, iron it, fold it neatly, and store it along with your other bedding sets.

Wash your duvet covers as soon as possible if there is a stain or spill. It is easier to remove a fresh stain or dirt than a stain that has been on the cover for several days. Make sure that you wash it thoroughly inside out to have a clean and fresh smelling cover for your down comforter.

If you are planning to buy a duvet and duvet cover set, you have to know how to do it properly. After all, these are things that you will use when you are sleeping. And you want to be 100 % comfortable when you are in snooze land. There are several tips or choosing the right duvet cover set. Here are some useful tips.

Choose something that has a high thread count or TC. A high TC means softer duvet cover. A duvet cover set with a 300 TC is perfect. But if you still want something softer, you can still choose something with a higher TC.

Decide on the fabric. Duvet covers can be made of several types of fabric—cotton, velvet, faux, suede, silk, etc. Cotton is the best option if you want something soft and comfortable. But if you want something that will keep you really warm in winter, velvet is a good choice.

Select the right style, pattern, or color. This depends on your bedroom’s existing theme. Choose something that will match or complement what you already have.

Size is also important. Choose a duvet cover set with the right size, depending on the down comforter or duvet that you will cover.

These are the things that you should consider when choosing a duvet cover set. What about the duvet filling? It is equally important to choose the right kind of filling which works best for you. Here is a list of the different types of duvet filling.

Down. This is the plumage that grows underneath a duck or a goose’s outer feathers. It is very fluffy and soft. It protects the birds from the cold harsh weather in winter. Goose down is more expensive than duck down because goose is rarer, unlike duck which are readily available in different parts of Asia.

Down and Feather. A combination of down and feather is cheaper than pure down. Pure down makes you really warm in winter while down and feather mix is perfect for summer or not-so-cold months.

Wool. This is another type of duvet filling that is natural. A wool-filled duvet will keep you warm during cold months and cool during hot seasons. Most of the time, a heavy wool-filled duvet is warmer than a light duvet.

Synthetic. These are made of polyester fabric and they are probably the cheapest in the market. They are not as comfortable as other types of duvet filling because it will not mold round your body when you lie down on it. A more expensive type of synthetic filling is microfiber. It feels like a down duvet but the similarities end there.

Cotton. This is popular in warm countries where people do not need heavy comforters in cold season. The price is similar to that of wool-filled duvets.

You have to consider these things when choosing a duvet and duvet cover for your bed. It is important to choose the best one if you want to be comfortable while sleeping.

Washing a comforter or duvet can be a difficult task because it is huge, heavy, and cumbersome, especially a king size duvet. Some also require special washing instructions. If you fail to follow these care instructions, your pricey duvet will get damaged and will go to waste. Moreover, you might need to go to the Laundromat because these big comforters may not fit in your regular washer at home. You have to sue a powerful, heavy duty washer which can only be found in Laundromats.

It is okay to clean the comforter itself but there is a way for you not to do it too often. You have to use a duvet cover. Here are some benefits of using duvet covers.

The main benefit of duvet covers is that it protects your comforter or duvet form dirt or stain. The main reason why you buy a duvet cover is because you do not want to wash your comforter all the time. It is easier to wash the cover than the duvet or comforter itself because it is lighter. It is also cheaper than the comforter. You will not feel as bad if something went wrong with the cover. Even though duvet covers can also be expensive, at least they are not as expensive as the comforter. You can easily replace the cover with a fresh new one to have a comfortable sleep.

You can also change the cover based on your bedroom’s theme and color. For example, if you just had your bedroom renovated and you changed the theme or main colors, you can easily replace the cover of your comforter to make it more appropriate to your new theme. Duvet covers come in so many styles and designs. You can choose different ones that will work best in your bedroom design. You can easily redecorate your bed without having to replace your comforter which is more expensive.

There are also different fabrics used to make duvet covers. You can choose a fabric that will be perfect for the current season or the place where you live. For instance, a duvet cover made of cotton is perfect for warm areas because cotton is very comfortable. It ‘breathes,’ just like most natural fabrics. If you want a fabric that will keep you warm, cozy, and snug in winter months, you can buy a velvet cover. In really hot places like tropical countries, it is okay to use the cover by itself without the comforter to make it cooler. You can use it to cover the mattress.

They also come in different sizes. Determine the size of your comforter before buying a cover. This is to make sure that you will buy the perfect fit. It can be a twin, full or queen, or king sized comforter and cover.

Using covers for your comforter or duvet really gives you a lot of benefits. That is why you should get yourself several covers in different styles, fabrics, and designs for your varying bedroom needs.
