How to Care for Your Duvet Covers
If you have a down comforter or a duvet, you should get a good quality cover that protects your expensive comforter and at the same time makes it look attractive. Duvet covers come in different styles, fabrics, patterns, and textures. Choose the one that suits your needs. For example, if you have a queen bedding or comforter, you should choose queen sized cover, of course, where your bedding will fit snugly. You should also choose style and color that are perfect for your bedroom décor.
You have to know that duvet covers are pricey, especially those that are made of high quality fabrics. You should know how to properly take care of them if you want them to last for a long time. To help you on this one, here are some tips to remember when caring for duvet covers.
Check whether your cover is machine washable or not. You can see this in the label. If it is not machine washable, you have to leave the cleaning to a professional dry cleaner service. But if it is machine washable, you can do it by yourself at home. When buying a duvet cover, it is better to choose something that you can easily wash by yourself, such as cotton duvet covers. After all, you buy covers for your down comforter because it is difficult to clean the comforter itself. It defeats the purpose if your cover is difficult to clean and maintain as well.
After reading the care instructions, you can proceed to washing the cover in your washer. If there are stains, make sure to pre-treat them before putting the cover in the washer. Choose a stain remover that is appropriate for the fabric. Wait for 5 minutes before placing the cover in the washer to let the fabric absorb the stain remover.
When placing the cover in the washer, make sure that its weight is evenly distributed. If it is not evenly distributed, the washer will not spin correctly, which can damage your washer and which will not thoroughly clean your duvet cover.
Use your regular laundry detergent and proceed washing the cover. You have to make sure that the stains are all gone before putting it in the dryer. You do not want to cover your down comforter with something that still has stains and dirt.
Place the cover in the dryer. Adjust the dryer in the lowest heat setting. It is okay to dry it several times that to use a high heat setting because this will protect you cover from bleaching or discoloration. Once it is completely dry, take it out, iron it, fold it neatly, and store it along with your other bedding sets.
Wash your duvet covers as soon as possible if there is a stain or spill. It is easier to remove a fresh stain or dirt than a stain that has been on the cover for several days. Make sure that you wash it thoroughly inside out to have a clean and fresh smelling cover for your down comforter.
