European 2 Duvets on 1 bed?
I’ve found several interesting discussions about the common practice in Europe to make use of two duvets on one bed. Apparently, some travelers to Europe are a bit puzzled over the practice from what I’ve read. Some are annoyed by it, but it is, when you consider it a sensible idea. Let me explain further. In many European countries it is common custom (even in hotel rooms) to have duvets on the bed instead of bed sheets, blankets and quilts. So, in a twist on this they have a tendency to make up a double bed with two single duvets. Why would this be?
Well, many married couples can tell you about tugs of war with the sheets and blankets, or with the “too hot/too cold” eternal struggle. For this reason each person having their own duvet really starts to make sense. With our sheets and blanket if I decide to turn it down, gravity starts to take effect and the single blanket starts sliding towards my wifes side of the bed and then off into the floor. With a single duvet on each of us this shouldn’t be an issue.
In some parts of Europe (Sweden) this custom of a single size duvet for each person is one reason the larger Queen and King Size duvets are a bit harder to find. On one level having separate duvets as covers makes sense on another level I don’t know if I’d get used to the idea.
